Katherine Sebring was born in Los Angeles, California. She fell in love with music at a young age and began studying piano when she was four with Lily Popova. When she moved with her family to the Netherlands in 2001, she entered the Young Talent class (now the Sweelinck Academie) of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and studied there as a student of Marjès Benoist for seven years. While finishing secondary school at Vossius Gymnasium, she took private lessons with concert pianist Marietta Petkova and when she graduated from Vossius she entered the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel to study piano in the class of Boyan Vodenitcharov. At the Koninklijk Conservatorium, Katherine obtained both her Bachelor’s Degree (2013) and her Master’s Degree (2016) magna cum laude, and concluded the postgraduate program ‘Concert Musician’ in 2017 with great distinction.
Katherine won prizes during the Prinses Christina Concours in 2005 (Regional Finals West 2: First prize and public’s prize; National Finals: Second prize, Public’s prize and New York Recital Award), she won the Avond van de Jonge Musicus, afterwards representing the Netherlands during the Eurovision Young Musician competition in 2006 in Vienna, and in 2009 she won a first prize during the American Protégé Competition. Most recently, she was a finalist in the third edition of the International Music Competition Triomphe de l’Art and her category’s winner of the Arinka Soap Award, and a finalist in the 14th edition of the Adilia Alieva International Piano and Young Instrumentalists Competition. She has performed in the United States, Canada and Europe as a solo pianist and in chamber music groups, and she has also performed in the Netherlands as a soloist with orchestras such as the Gelders Orkest, Holland Symfonia and the Rotterdams Kamerorkest.
Throughout her time studying piano, as well as after graduating from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, she took part in masterclasses given by professional pianists including Daniël Wayenberg, Galina Vracheva, Alexei Lubimov, Jerome Rose, Malcolm Bilson, Claire Désert and Marietta Petkova. Whilst studying in Brussels, she also enjoyed working more in depth on chamber music (including Lied-repertoire), piano accompaniment repertoire, improvisation, harmony and counterpoint. She had the pleasure to take lessons from, amongst others, Thomas Dieltjens, Anne Op de Beeck, Inge Spinette and Kristin De Smedt, and had the privilege to take part in the Udo Reinemann International Lied Masterclasses (session 2016-2017) as part of a duo with mezzo-soprano Camille Bauer.
Katherine lives in South Holland, the Netherlands, and spends most of her free time reading, drawing and painting.
